The Review

We had never been on a cruise before. I'll be honest - I wasn't entirely sure what to expect and I had the classic first timer worry that with so many people on one ship it would feel crowded, chaotic and overwhelming.

It was the total opposite.

We went in August 2023 - myself, my husband and our two children who were 3 and 8 at the time. Seven nights on the Disney Dream sailing through Northern Europe. And three years later, my children still talk about it. We reminisce about it regularly as a family and we are absolutely desperate to book another one.

We are converted cruisers. Completely and utterly.

The Ship

The Disney Dream is stunning. Despite being home to thousands of guests, it never once felt busy or overwhelming. There was always space, always something to do, always somewhere to be. Disney have an extraordinary ability to make something enormous feel intimate and personal and the Dream is the perfect example of that.

The weather was, if I'm being honest, pretty terrible for most of our Northern Europe sailing - rain almost every day. But here is the thing about a Disney cruise - it genuinely does not matter. There is so much to do on board that the weather becomes almost irrelevant. On the days the sun came out we made the most of the rooftop pool, the waterslide and watching a film on the giant screen on the funnel. On the rainy days we barely noticed we were missing anything.

The Cabin

We booked a Verandah cabin and were allocated our specific room on arrival. I was not expecting what we found. The cabins are significantly larger than you'd imagine - genuinely spacious, beautifully designed and with a huge balcony at the back of the ship. Unfortunately the Northern Europe weather meant we didn't get to enjoy the balcony as much as we'd have liked. But if you're sailing somewhere warmer that balcony would be absolutely incredible.

The Food

Outstanding. Every single restaurant, every single meal. I could not fault it at all. There was always plenty of choice and the quality was consistently excellent throughout.

But the thing that made dining truly special on the Disney Dream was the rotating dining programme. Each night you dine in a different restaurant - allocated before you board - which keeps things fresh and exciting throughout the trip. And here is the part that made me fall in love with Disney all over again.

Your waiter or waitress stays with you for the entire cruise regardless of which restaurant you're in each night.

Our waitress was called Grace. By the end of seven nights Grace had become the fifth member of our family at dinner. She knew what drinks we'd want before we'd even sat down. She knew the children's preferences, she knew ours. She remembered everything. Those extra touches - small, thoughtful, completely personal - are what Disney does better than anyone else in the world. It wasn't service. It was a relationship. And I think about Grace every time I recommend a Disney cruise to a client.

The Entertainment

Where do I even start.

Films throughout the day - either in the theatre or on the giant funnel screen on the top deck. Character meet and greets that happen organically throughout the ship - not the queuing for hours style of the parks, but genuinely magical spontaneous moments. Walking down a corridor and Minnie Mouse walks past and waves. Goofy turning up at kids club for an impromptu dance party. Fireworks and deck parties on the top deck. The sail away party was one of the highlights of the entire trip - the whole ship comes together and it is genuinely joyful.

And then there are the shows. West End standard productions in the onboard theatre every evening. Real performances, real production values, the kind of show you'd pay proper money to see on land. Cameras aren't allowed which I initially found frustrating but actually I think it forces you to just be present and enjoy it - and we absolutely did.

My son was even picked as a volunteer to be IN one of the shows. He was 8, up on stage, part of a Disney production. He still talks about it. I will never forget watching his face.

The Kids Clubs

My son was 8 and absolutely obsessed. He genuinely did not want to leave. The kids clubs run until 11pm every evening with a full programme of activities, characters, games and entertainment. For a parent that is an extraordinary gift - knowing your child is safe, happy and having the time of their life while you actually get to relax properly.

My daughter was 3 at the time and found it a little harder to settle - we'd usually get a call within about 45 minutes to come and collect her. But that is completely normal for that age and the staff were wonderful with her. By the time your little one is 4 or 5 they'll be running in without looking back.

The Ports

We chose not to get off at every port - partly due to the weather and partly because there was so much to do on board we didn't feel we were missing anything by staying. We did disembark at Nynashamn in Sweden and Kiel in Germany which were both lovely. But honestly one of the unexpected joys of a Disney cruise is discovering that the ship itself IS the destination. You don't need to leave it to have an incredible trip.

The Other Guests

One of the things that surprised us most was discovering just how passionate Disney cruisers are. Walking down the corridors you'd see cabin doors decorated with magnets - family name plaques and little symbols showing which Disney cruises they'd been on. Some doors had dozens of them. We had no idea this was a whole community, a whole culture. People who cruise with Disney once almost always come back. Now we understand why completely.

Who Is This Perfect For?

Everyone. And I mean that genuinely.

On our sailing there were older couples, honeymooners, families with children of all ages and avid Disney fans who had been on dozens of these cruises. The ship caters for every single one of them brilliantly.

For families specifically, I'd say children from about 4 upwards get the absolute maximum out of it. My 8 year old was in his element from day one. My 3 year old had a wonderful time but needed us a bit more.

Tips Before You Book

Book early and sort your dining slot as soon as you can. We were fortunate to get onto the waitlist for the 5:30pm dining slot - without that we'd have been eating at 8pm which with young children is far too late. The earlier sitting books up fast so get in there.

Also - go in with an open mind if you're a first time cruiser. Everything you think you know about cruises being crowded, stuffy or not for you - set it aside. A Disney cruise is its own thing entirely.

Would We Book Again?

Without a heartbeat of hesitation. We are already planning our next one. The Disney Dream gave our family seven of the most magical nights we have ever had together and I will recommend it to anyone who will listen.
