I get asked this question a lot. Usually by someone who has been thinking about it for a while, has seen something on Instagram, maybe knows someone who's doing it, and is quietly wondering whether it's actually real or whether it's too good to be true.

So let me answer it honestly. Not as a sales pitch. Just as someone who has been doing this for six years and has helped hundreds of people into the industry.

If you're wondering whether becoming a travel agent from home in the UK is worth it in 2026...Yes it is. For the right person, it is absolutely worth it. But let me tell you what "the right person" actually looks like - and what to expect when you start.

Where I Was Before

Six years ago I was working as a corporate manager in the fleet industry. It paid well, it was fine, but I wasn't in love with it. Then I became a mum and everything shifted. Suddenly I wanted more time. More flexibility. More of a life that felt like mine.

I'd always loved travel. Always wanted to work in the industry. But the idea of working in a high street travel shop didn't appeal - the hours, the targets, the commute. None of it fitted around the life I wanted.

When I discovered you could become an independent travel agent from home, working under a host agency, with no retail shop and no fixed hours, it felt like the thing I'd been looking for without knowing what it was called.

My Biggest Doubts Before I Started

I want to be honest about this because I think it helps.

I had no prior experience in travel. None. I worried that people wouldn't book with me because of that. Why would someone trust me with their family holiday when I had no track record?

I was also not great on social media. At all. The idea of putting myself out there online felt uncomfortable and I wasn't sure I could do it.

And I wasn't naive - I knew this wasn't a guaranteed income from day one. I had real financial responsibilities and I needed to know this could actually work.

The Reality of the First Few Months

This is the part I think is really important to understand before you start.

It is not instant income. It is not a get rich quick opportunity. If that's what you're looking for, this isn't it.

Travel works on commission and commission is paid after people travel - which means there can be a gap between booking and being paid. In the early months you are building. Building your knowledge, building your confidence, building your reputation.

What I found worked really well from the start was simply sharing my journey. Talking to friends and family. Letting people know what I was doing and what I now had access to. Word of mouth is powerful - more powerful than any social media post in the early days. You'll be surprised how many people in your circle hate looking at holidays themselves and would love someone they trust to sort it for them.

The people who do well in this industry are the ones who are consistent, who keep going past the point where it feels slow and who genuinely love what they're doing. That enthusiasm comes through and people respond to it.

What My Working Week Actually Looks Like Now

I'm a mum first and foremost. That hasn't changed and it never will.

But around that - I manage my own time completely. Some days I do a lot. I'm supporting my agents, putting together training sessions, catching up on quote requests and bookings, planning content. Other days I barely work at all. And both of those are absolutely fine because no one is telling me otherwise.

I don't answer to anyone but myself. I don't have a boss. I don't have a commute. I don't have a performance review or a set of KPIs someone else decided for me.

My days, my choices. That is what freedom actually feels like and it took saying yes to starting my own online business to understand that it was possible.

Who Is This NOT Right For?

I think this is just as important as talking about who it IS right for, so I'll be straight with you.

If you genuinely hate looking at holidays - the searching, the comparing, the planning - you are probably not going to love doing it for other people either. Enthusiasm for travel and for finding the perfect trip is at the heart of this. Without it, it becomes a chore.

If you are looking for instant income and can't commit to building something over time, this will frustrate you.

And if you want someone to hand you a guaranteed salary and tell you exactly what to do every day, this isn't that. The freedom cuts both ways - you have to be self motivated enough to use it.

What I'd Say to Anyone Sitting on the Fence

Time passes anyway.

That's the thing I come back to whenever someone tells me they're not sure, they want to think about it, they'll look at it next month.

Tomorrow is never promised. If you have an itch, scratch it. Take a chance on yourself because you genuinely never know - this could be the thing you've been needing all this time. It could be the thing that opens up opportunities you haven't even thought of yet and changes your life in ways you didn't expect.

It changed mine. Six years in, I've helped hundreds of agents, I travel more than ever, I work on my terms and I have never once wished I stayed in the fleet industry.

So Is It Worth It in 2026?

For the right person, absolutely yes.

The travel industry is thriving. People are booking more holidays than ever. The demand for a trusted, knowledgeable agent who can take the stress of planning away is real and growing.

The opportunity is the same as it was when I started. The difference is that in 2026 there are even more tools, more support and more ways to build your presence than there were six years ago.

If you're curious, the best thing you can do is have a conversation. Not a sales call. Just an honest chat about whether this could work for your life.
